Death metal is not a sub genre for the faint hearted, those who lend their ears to mainstream pop sounds tend to scoff at metal music in general, they’ve probably never even heard any death metal songs but If they did, I’m sure they’d almost faint at those growling vocals of doom and that’s why I love it!

Death metal makes no apologises for its macabre tones and visual connotations, it is an extreme form of metal music that takes you on a hell raising journey throughout the duration of any given track.

It is widely noted that the subgenre of death metal was spawned from it’s metal music subgenre counterparts, thrash metal and black metal in the 1980’s. A major early influence in to the development of the sounds now associated with death metal can be accredited to the American thrash metal band Slayer. Slayer’s album ‘Reign in Blood'described my Kerrang as the ‘heaviest of all time'infused rapid speeds with lyrics about death and violence and graphic artwork, is cited as being the stimulation for many death metal bands in developing their sound.

Whether you work for a local white diesel suppliers and listen to death metal whilst driving your truck for work, or you’re a confused kid trying to figure out your place in this world, death metal incites emotions inside you that can propel you with intensity of enthusiasm and energy. Those who despise the genre (likelihood they’ve never actually listened to it) will say quite the opposite, it stirs up inner morbid feelings and hatred for the world and this is simply not the case.

Nowadays, like all music genre’s death metal is developing and diversifying with underground artists and the musical tastes of the younger generation. Metalcore has experienced wide popularity in recent years and death metal has as equally seen the emergence of death metal subgenre called deathcore. Bands like Suicide Silence have taken the essence of metalcore music and infused it with death metal traits. The result is a sound that features breakneck drumming (blast beats) the growled vocals as well as those that are screamed, breakdowns and melodic tones.

So for those cynics, take note, death metal isn’t going anywhere, it fact it’s for ever emerging and developing in to new and exhilarating sounds, wake up and listen!

OK, so we all know the Eagles are amazingly talented musicians, super cool rock stars and all-round great guys, but it turns out Jesse had a hidden talent; TV presenting. Unsurprisingly, he wasn’t introducing ‘Songs of Praise'or guest presenting the ‘Antiques Roadshow'(though it would have been great to see the reaction of the usual sweet little old ladies on the programme as a moustachioed, tattooed rock God enthused “I loved this jewellery ”) but was featuring on the Internet TV channel Vice, co-hosting a documentary series about living the rock ‘n'roll dream.

The 12-part series, called “On the Road” was presented by Jesse for the first six episodes before Tim Harrington of Les Savy Fav takes over. Jesse chats to fellow rockers about what inspired them to get into the business and the hard-working guys behind the scene that make albums and gigs happen, as well as featuring a host of live performances from some of the rock greats – including the Eagles!

As Jesse’s stint in front of the camera came to an end, he heads out to the Rancho de la Luna, where dozens if not hundreds of rock stars and musicians have headed for inspiration, peace and the chance to knock back bottles of whiskey in the desert. Taking a tour with fellow Eagle Dave Catching, the two learn more about the amazing history of this influential and almost mystical venue. The show finishes on a high note as Jesse interviews the Eagle’s hardcore engineer John about his craziest escapades during a life on the road, before all the guys convene for a secret desert gig. Of course, nothing compares to live shoes, but as a poor second, “On the Road” is pretty damn cool – and Jesse at least knows he has career options should the Eagles ever call it a day..

Yay – the Eagles are heading across the Atlantic!! Well, not the Eagles in their entirety, but Jesse is planning a European tour with his new project Boots Electric “real soon” according to a recent interview. Get me a ticket!

Actually, the whole interview was great to read, if you’re from the UK. The whole chat seemed to be about how much he loves us – which is only to be expected seeing as his family has Welsh roots. But he seems to have a special place in his heart for Scotland, especially their deep-friend confetionary bars and propensity for violence… Well, Jesse if you ever spent several hours looking for the only petrol station selling diesel Dundee has to offer then you might not love it quite so much!

He saves his highest praise for my own home country, England, though. Apparently, if the US invented rock n’roll it was us supposedly stuffy Englishmen who “re-energised” it. Why, thank you Jesse! I’ll pass on your message to The Beatles and The Stones next time I see them, shall I? Hoepfully, if he loves England and the UK so much we’ll be on his list of venues when it comes to organising the Boots Electric tour. And can I say one thing now; don’t just go to London and think you’ve ticked the whole country off your list. I live in the north of England and would probably find it much easier to head to a gig in Scotland, if one was scheduled. Just so long as it wasn’t in Dundee…

The Wikipedia entry for the Eagles describes them as an ‘American Rock Band’. That’s not exactly how I would describe them, and I’m pretty sure it’s not how Josh Homme would describe them either. Yet Homme has been busy elsewhere this year collaborating with Alain Johannes on the theme tune for the animated US TV show ‘Aqua Unit Patrol Squad 1’. With Jesse Hughes off promoting his standalone album, Eagle’s fans are becoming increasingly resigned to the fact that the band may never tour again.

Critics have argued that Homme has always been distracted by his commitments to the Queens of the Stone Age, yet he has always returned to the Eagles at one time or another. With Hughes charismatically giving every audience member a joygasm at all their performances, it seems only a matter of time before the Eagles return to the roost and belt out some great hits for the legions of fans following them.

In the meantime the best way to keep the faith alive is through the internet. The Eagles do listen and they do keep an eye on all the fan sites including this one, so if we all start demanding a return to the stage from them on a regular basis we may yet lure Hughes and Homme back to perform. In fact I think that is something all Eagles fans should now agree to. To save our souls and minds the Eagles must return and we are the only ones who can get them back. Pass it on to your friends, your family, your colleagues…anyone who can join the cause! Share the music videos…

Spread the word abroad as well. If you’re going on holiday keep in touch with the community on your phone – it’s important that we do not let the momentum slip. If you’re worried about spending too much money whilst you’re away, don’t be. There are some great roaming rates available to use. You just have to know where to look and it doesn’t take two minutes to track down a good deal using the internet. The Eagles must fly again, and with all of us campaigning together they can!

Another way I would suggest to help us promote the band and force them to perform again would be to share their music with as many people as possible. Send your friends links to this site, send them tracks from the albums, Bluetooth information, email shot everyone you know, start your own Eagles blog…do anything that will get the band’s attention and make them soar once again.

People who have never heard of the Eagles deserve to find out exactly what they’ve been missing. Any friend you have who is not traditionally a rock or metal fan should be easy to convince as the Eagles are neither. To fight for the Eagles to return we must stand together. A hundred voices are better then just one! Long live the Eagles of Death Metal.

I may be female and a fan of the Eagles of Death Metal, but I would like to think I’m not a typical female fan of the Eagles of Death Metal! A couple of my girlfriends, who are also big fans of the group, are forever drooling over Jesse, going on and on about how gorgeous he is and how is body is so hot, etc etc. I have to say, I would rather attend a 20-hour seminar on HR software solutions than go on one date with the guy, even if he does write some kick-ass rock tunes!

Let’s face it, when it comes to romance, the guy is bad news. He seems to be a living indictment of the myth that women are only attracted to “bad boys”. First, he cheated on his gorgeous wife, (who I happen to think was well out of his league anyway and is probably a lot happier without him dragging her down) with an as yet unconfirmed number of twenty-somethings, and now his latest relationship, with an LA tattoo artist and long-time Eagles muse seems to have broken down. Officially, Jesse has blamed the split on a long-distance relationship, but rumours suggest that there may have been few other girls involved at some point in the break-up. Really? That does surprise me…

To be honest, as a fan of his music, I don’t care that much what Jesse gets up to in his private life. As long as he keeps making great music, he can do whatever he wants in the bedroom.

When NME reported news that Eagles frontman Jesse Hughes was working on a solo project back in April, many fans immediately assumed the band were splitting up. Not so according to Hughes. He fully expects the band to be back on tour next year. A quick look at the official website showed a lot of news about Hughes'solo project ‘Boots Electric’, but no new tour dates for the Eagles have been announced which has made many fans uneasy.

I was in New Orleans last year in October when Eagles played at the Voodoo Experience. They performed twice throughout the night in two different tents and they were awesome. I took so many photos and videos of their set which I’ve since shared with everyone I know and as many fans as possible. When you see Eagles play live it’s understandable that people would get upset when no new tour dates are planned. My only problem at the time was the international roaming charges I had which stopped me from uploading all my photos and videos to the net as quickly as I wanted. If you plan on following a banc on tour I highly recommend making sure you have a good phone tariff with excellent data storage and broadband access. My phone bill following the concert in New Orleans was almost as much as the ticket cost me!

Despite my interest in ‘Boots Electric'I do hope Eagles get together for another tour in the New Year. It feels really weird knowing there are no new dates announced. Now that I’ve got my phone and tariff all set, I’m ready to follow the boys everywhere! Go Eagles!

The other morning I was talking to a friend of mine about Rowan Dartington stock broking services, which was a rather sensible conversation when N.I.B by Black Sabbath came on over the radio. It took me by surprise firstly because it is not often that Black Sabbath have radio air time and secondly because I had forgotten how much I loved the music they made. Sometimes when a band haven’t created any new music together for a considerable amount of time they tend to slip from your memory somewhat. I remember listening to the Black Sabbath album Paranoid and becoming completely enthralled and mesmerised by this unique sound – it was unlike music I had ever heard before. Black Sabbath are hailed as the founders of heavy metal music which has subsequently spawned other genres such as death metal and thrash metal. You would be hard pushed to find a metal genre band that could genuinely say they have not been influenced by Black Sabbath in some way. The fact that the band has had such a long life span verifies their successful status in a commercial arena where it is normally difficult for metal music to achieve main stream success. The band has had numerous line up changes, my personal favourite is the early years when the band was fronted by Ozzy Osbourne, who has at previous points returned to the band for various stints and appearances. If you are not familiar with Black Sabbath take a listen to some classic singles such as Iron Man, Paranoid, War Pigs and Changes.

Death metal according to a close friend of mine is one the best thing that happened to rock music. The same person once told me that rock is the best thing that ever happened to music. In order words, death metal is the best that ever happened to music. My friend is so engrossed with metal and he is like the number one death metal fan I know in the world. Everything about him speaks death metal music. He knows so much about the bands and their history and even once thought of starting a death metal magazine but his father refused to sponsor him because he was tired of having his son so involved with death metal songs. The old man was ready to help him start a business similar to that of Red Diesel Liverpool but never was he ready to have a hand in such a business.

My friend’s girlfriend once said that the only thing she had to compete with was his choice of music. Almost everything about him had a hint of death metal. His books during undergraduate days either had pictures or were original souvenir form the bands he cherished the most. You cannot listen to his iPod if you are not a fan of death metal. He is the only person I know that stores just one genre of music on their portable music players. That is the way he rolls. By the time we got to our final year in the university, he was well known especially because he had a number of death metal tee shirts. There was however one thing that also needs to be said about him; he has never had the opportunity to see a live performance. This is something he is really looking forward to.

A friend of mine asked me the other day if I could teach him to head bang. I get on with this guy a hell of a lot and he’s very much into the same music as me. He’s definitely not one of these metal head wannabes that decided in their mid twenties that they like heavy metal because they picked up an Iron Maiden album in the sale because he liked the cover. He is a true death metal head through and through. I guess the main thing he’s lacking is having any long hair; he is suffering from being a little bit challenged in the follicle department. Having long hair allows a person to accentuate their movements when it comes to the head-banging department. It you have short hair then you can sometimes end up doing yourself some serious damage and end up having to have some serious physio jobs done for you later on in life.

Head banging is something that us metal heads do as a connection to our music. It’s more than dancing it’s an expression of the heaviness of the music we love. There is no structure, there is nothing that can be learnt or sequence that can be defined. It is a release of aggression and frustration that we build up in our everyday lives. It is something that has to be felt and not demonstrated. When you’re in a metal bar you’re not showing off how good you can dance you are just simply enjoying the music. That’s not something you can teach.

The Eagles are denying rumours of a split, but when a key member of the band decides he wants to go off and work on a solo project…. Well, I always fear that means the band’s days are numbered!
That’s why I’m a bit torn over the news that Eagles frontman Jesse Hughes is going to be launching his debut solo album later this year. On one hand I’m really excited to hear some new stuff from someone associated with EODM, and curious to see what direction Jesse will go in without Josh’s influence. However, I’m afraid he’ll like being a solo act so much that he’ll decide to leave permanently. That could mean EODM split or, even worse, they try and get someone in to replace Jesse. I hate it when bands try and sneak new musicians in when someone leaves; as if the fans aren’t going to notice or care that suddenly there’s some stranger behind the mic, singing old EODM songs in a voice that isn’t Jesse’s…. No thanks! I’d rather give a four-hour lecture on the best worldwide sim card than go to an EODM gig without Jesse.
Of course, I’m probably getting all worked up over nothing. I mean, Josh has tonees of side projects going on all the time, and he always returns to EODM, so why should Jesse be any different, right? We should encourage him to go out and create his own music and his own sound. We should be excited to hear what the new album sounds like. And then we should start emailing him furiously asking when he’s going back to work with EODM!
