Eagles of death metal

Scream & Growl

Death Metal music as an art form got popular in the 1980’s and the band Death and its leader Chuck Schuldiner are often called the “father of death metal”. This form of music is a subgenre of the thrash music and early black music. Bands like Obsessed and Morbid Angel are considered the early bands that ventured into this kind of music. The band usually consists of two guitarists, a vocalist and a drummer other than a bass player and drummer.

The Inquisition, a Comlumbian black metal pair of two, played at Vancouver recently at the Funky Winker Beans dive bar. The location of the bar was ideal, just where the filth and grime of Vancouver breathes. The opening act was from Radioactive Vomit and they got into the heavy metal producing act almost immediately. Headed straight from the province’s central Victoria, was Mitochodrion which played hardcore death metal music stirring the crowd to create the right evil atmosphere. The upcoming band dished out music that was mature. They ensured there was never a dull moment, so to speak and though lengthy the show didn’t lack in its brutal assault. (Though, there was this animated couple right in front of me who actually had the time to compare caravan insurance quotes!) Up next was the Gyibaaw as the lead guitarist J. Pahl had master minded the entire tour plan. Not falling for the “we are the clones”disease the band played great metal music that actually reeked of their youngster spirit!

It was the turn of the sans bassist team of Inquisition to play out full volume next. The secret of the success of this team of two is their melodies tunes that lead to an almost eerie manner of celebrating the dark and paying homage to it. Their stint, though short, left a lasting impression on the audience who kept asking the team of Dagon and Incubus to get a bassist.

The night was long, winding and full of red painted burly guys on their own weapons. It was the perfect setting for death metal fun and the crowd received their freebie, of an enjoyable evening!

The Eagles of Death Metal at the Voodoo Experience

The Eagles of Death Metal at the Voodoo Experience

As most of you should know by now The Eagles of Death Metal will be playing The Voodoo Experience which happens every year in New Orleans Louisiana. If you can afford to get a ticket it’s definitely worth going, not only to see The Eagles of Death Metal but also to absorb and enjoy the festival as a whole. The Voodoo Experience (or Fest as it’s sometimes known) is a music and arts festival known for programming and embracing many different musical styles. It has a brilliant vibe and has been nominated for Pollstars Music Festival of the year twice, which goes to show how beloved it s among music fans. The timing of The Voodoo Experience (which takes place over Halloween weekend) couldn’t be better for creating an amazing and possibly potentially spooky atmosphere too. I genuinely can’t wait to see The Eagles of Death Metal live again and can honestly say that they are the best live band I’ve seen and (having been an avid music fan since the age of thirteen) I’ve seen a hell of a lot of live bands! No one can compare to Jesse Hughes and in my opinion he really is one of the most joyful and charismatic front men I’ve ever seen. Of course with a room full of die hard fans it’s not hard to get people going but Jesse manages to warm up the entire crowd so that even those people who were dragged along by their partner say and hadn’t seen the band before leave as devoted fans. To be honest even if money is tight for you right now (and let’s face it for many people it certainly is) I’d still recommend you beg, steal or borrow to get a ticket. Talking of money being tight I bought a new Samsung camera for the festival as I’ve been using my phone to take photos for the past three years and the results aren’t great. Anyway I managed to use some comet.co.uk discount vouchers which I was pretty pleased about and now means I can justify spending more on other essentials such as beer and festival merchandise!

Death Metal to my Ears

The first time I ever heard Eagles of Death Metal coming from my brother’s bedroom I was blown away. The overwhelming sound of drums and guitar teamed with the funky beats and melodic voices of the band instantly drew me in. I headed right up there, pushed the door open and demanded he borrow me the album, obviously he obliged and I walked away one happy little lady. That’s where my love affair with Eagles of Death Metal began and I am still swooning over them now.

My first live concert

They say that you never forget your first time! I have been a fan of the Eagles of Death Metal for nearly 10 years now. But the very first live concert I saw wasn’t one theirs. Well, at that time they weren’t even a band (Eagles of Death Metal was formed in 1998).

The year was 1995 when my big brother took me to see Bon Jovi. We almost didn’t make it because our car broke down. And because we didn’t have cellphones and couldn’t call a car servicing company like now a days, we had to abandon the car so that we could make it in time. It was also my first time when I visited the stadium. I remember it being so huge and full of people. I must say that I was a little bit scared. You can’t really blame me; I was 8 years old and I was in a place filled with thousands of people. What if I got separated from my big brother and couldn’t find him later. I would have been lost.

Boots Electric At The Garage, Live Review

Sipping down a hard drink before the gig began at the aptly called Famous Cock Clash I noted that it’s usual when I visit these places to see teenage girls adorned in ginger moustaches that are clearly fakes. But this is what you would have to expect when a rock star steps up on stage in a not so large club. Yet Jesse Hughes, aka Boots Electric, cannot be considered your average rock star.

Till Death Do Us Part

Death metal is not a sub genre for the faint hearted, those who lend their ears to mainstream pop sounds tend to scoff at metal music in general, they’ve probably never even heard any death metal songs but If they did, I’m sure they’d almost faint at those growling vocals of doom and that’s why I love it!

Death metal makes no apologises for its macabre tones and visual connotations, it is an extreme form of metal music that takes you on a hell raising journey throughout the duration of any given track.

Eagles spreading their wings

OK, so we all know the Eagles are amazingly talented musicians, super cool rock stars and all-round great guys, but it turns out Jesse had a hidden talent; TV presenting. Unsurprisingly, he wasn’t introducing ‘Songs of Praise'or guest presenting the ‘Antiques Roadshow'(though it would have been great to see the reaction of the usual sweet little old ladies on the programme as a moustachioed, tattooed rock God enthused “I loved this jewellery ”) but was featuring on the Internet TV channel Vice, co-hosting a documentary series about living the rock ‘n'roll dream.

Eagles come to Europe!

Eagles come to Europe!

Yay – the Eagles are heading across the Atlantic!! Well, not the Eagles in their entirety, but Jesse is planning a European tour with his new project Boots Electric “real soon” according to a recent interview. Get me a ticket!

Actually, the whole interview was great to read, if you’re from the UK. The whole chat seemed to be about how much he loves us – which is only to be expected seeing as his family has Welsh roots. But he seems to have a special place in his heart for Scotland, especially their deep-friend confetionary bars and propensity for violence… Well, Jesse if you ever spent several hours looking for the only petrol station selling diesel Dundee has to offer then you might not love it quite so much!

He saves his highest praise for my own home country, England, though. Apparently, if the US invented rock n’roll it was us supposedly stuffy Englishmen who “re-energised” it. Why, thank you Jesse! I’ll pass on your message to The Beatles and The Stones next time I see them, shall I? Hoepfully, if he loves England and the UK so much we’ll be on his list of venues when it comes to organising the Boots Electric tour. And can I say one thing now; don’t just go to London and think you’ve ticked the whole country off your list. I live in the north of England and would probably find it much easier to head to a gig in Scotland, if one was scheduled. Just so long as it wasn’t in Dundee…

Long Live The Eagles!

The Wikipedia entry for the Eagles describes them as an ‘American Rock Band’. That’s not exactly how I would describe them, and I’m pretty sure it’s not how Josh Homme would describe them either. Yet Homme has been busy elsewhere this year collaborating with Alain Johannes on the theme tune for the animated US TV show ‘Aqua Unit Patrol Squad 1’. With Jesse Hughes off promoting his standalone album, Eagle’s fans are becoming increasingly resigned to the fact that the band may never tour again.

Split not a split, just a rest.

When NME reported news that Eagles frontman Jesse Hughes was working on a solo project back in April, many fans immediately assumed the band were splitting up. Not so according to Hughes. He fully expects the band to be back on tour next year. A quick look at the official website showed a lot of news about Hughes'solo project ‘Boots Electric’, but no new tour dates for the Eagles have been announced which has made many fans uneasy.

I was in New Orleans last year in October when Eagles played at the Voodoo Experience. They performed twice throughout the night in two different tents and they were awesome. I took so many photos and videos of their set which I’ve since shared with everyone I know and as many fans as possible. When you see Eagles play live it’s understandable that people would get upset when no new tour dates are planned. My only problem at the time was the international roaming charges I had which stopped me from uploading all my photos and videos to the net as quickly as I wanted. If you plan on following a banc on tour I highly recommend making sure you have a good phone tariff with excellent data storage and broadband access. My phone bill following the concert in New Orleans was almost as much as the ticket cost me!

Despite my interest in ‘Boots Electric'I do hope Eagles get together for another tour in the New Year. It feels really weird knowing there are no new dates announced. Now that I’ve got my phone and tariff all set, I’m ready to follow the boys everywhere! Go Eagles!
